Take the first road on the left.

    Hello.
I think I will ask you a silly question.

Please look at this map: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/geo...preading/city/

If we were standing on 'River St.' (between 4 and 5 on the left side of the map), would "the first road on the left" mean '5th Ave.'?

    Thank you.

Re: Take the first road on the left.

It depends which way you're facing on River St.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Thank you, ems.
I can see 'Moon River' on my right.
    Which way am I facing?

I think you are facing 'River St.' and "the first road on the left" means '4th Ave.'

Re: Take the first road on the left.

If Moon River is on your right and you are on River Street, you are facing southeast. If you are between 4th and 5th, the first street on your left would be 4th.

Re: Take the first road on the left.

    He's not between 4th and 5th Streets. He's on River Street between the y-coordinates 4 and 5.
He's looking east down Oak St, and 5th Ave is the first on his left. However, he doesn't give his x coordinate, which would complicate matters if River street wasn't outside those North-South coordinates (of 4 and 5) for most of the map.

Re: Take the first road on the left.

I get your point, but even on River street between coordinates 4 and 5, with Moon River on his right, 4th avenue could be the first street on his left. In that case 5th avenue could also be correct.

    You're right. I couldn't explain properly where I was.
I'm sorry to have confused you (Raymott, Mike, ems, Matthew).

Re: Take the first road on the left.

It was not your fault. The confusion was a result of the coordinates and the streets having the same numbers.

Re: Take the first road on the left.

If you are all the way on the left side of the map, on River Street near "Dog Bridge" then you would take take your first left if you wanted to turn onto 5th, continue straight to be on Oak Street, or bear right to stay on River Street.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
