    Medical terms

    Hi there!

I`m a Surgeon and last night I read a sentence from a Plastic Surgery book, as follows: ''The importance of incision quality cannot be over-emphasized in diminishing signs that the patient has undergone a surgical procedure.'' In this case, OVER-EMPHASIZED means UNDERESTIMATED or OVERESTIMATED?
    Cheers,
    Tito

    Re: Medical terms

It means not matter how much you emphasize it, it's not enough. It's very, very important. You might also hear this as "I can't emphasize this enough." (I'm stating it very clearly, but even if I said it louder and more often, it could still be even louder, said even more often, etc.)
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Medical terms

For all surgeons, but particularly plastic surgeons, the incision itself plays a major role in a satisfactory or unsatisfactory result. The piece says that this cannot be stressed too much. An expert surgeon knows where to make an incision, how to hide it, in what direction to make it (using Langer's lines), and the best way to close it.
