Interesting... I would not have marked 'to see' wrong.

In fact, I found 10 entries for 'avoid to' in COCA. Sounds like none of them is right!:-|

it's easy grammatical rule to remember that 'ing' infinitive should be used after the verb 'avoid' .

I avoided seeing him. I left playing the football. I rejected accepting your letter. I refused sending your e-mail.
Only noun ;-)

I'd check these carefully- you refuse to do something, for instance.

Yes, but quickly check it because I am eager to know or to get the answer.

Are the sentences correct my friends?

I can not avoid myself drinking if I go to the party!

I try to avoid drinking if I must drive after that! (i try to say "i dont drink and drive)

Get respect from everyone; avoid making fun of yourself!

Take myself out of the first. For the second, I'd say:
I try to avoid drinking if I have to drive afterwards.

In my opinion, "to + Verb" refers to an aim, and a gerund "V-ing" refers to st that happened ( similar to a noun). you could avoid st but could not avoid an aim. So seeing is true:D
