how to read this mixed number

    Hello,

I have recenty seen a mixed number whose equivalent fraction is 1.6. It is written as a whole number "1" followed by a proper fraction "3/5". I know I should read it like "one and three fifths". But I am just wondering if I can also say "one and three over five"?

    Thanks.

You could, but it would be unusual.

For larger numbers, this is common. For 376/983 you would more likely here "three seventy-six over nine eighty-three."

But "three fifths" is pretty basic. Stick with that.

In BrE, we're more likely to call 376/983 "three hundred and seventy-six over nine hundred and eighty-three".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
