    Punctuation

    English teacher

Do you think a comma is necessary after the following time expressions?
(It’s a short summary of the poem “Beowulf”).

    (a) One night(,) King Hrothgar of Denmark…
    (b) So every night(,) he attacks the hall…
    (c) That night(,) Beowulf and his men…
    (d) The next night(,) she [Grendel’s mother] goes to Heorot…

    Same doubt here:

    (e) King Hrothgar builds a great mead-hall(,) called Heorot(,) where his warriors…
    (f) But Grendel, a horrible monster who lives in a lake(,) is jealous of…

    One more doubt:

    (g) He [Beowulf] tears Grendel’s arm off. / one of Grendel’s arms off.

    Thanks a lot.

    In my opinion:

    a - Comma
    b - No comma
    c - Comma
    d - Comma
e - No comma after "mead hall". Comma after "Heorot"
    f - Comma
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Thanks emsr2d2.

What's your opinion about point (g)?

    Re: Punctuation

Sorry, I missed g. Well, the logical assumption is that most people have two arms so even if you say "He pulled X's arm off", most people would assume she still had one remaining. However, it might be important to know that it was one of two, or which one it was. So maybe "He pulled X's right/left arm off".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: Punctuation

I agree with ems except for "e". I would use a comma after "hall". "Called Heorot" just adds accessory information to the sentence.
