Usage of 'would' and 'would have' after 'had'

What is the difference between, "If I had been there, things would be better now" and "If I had been there, things would have been better now"? I get confused with the usage of 'would' and 'would have' after 'had'. What are the general rules?

Re: Usage of 'would' and 'would have' after 'had'

If I had been there, things would be better NOW.
If I had been there, things would have been better THEN.

It doesn't make sense to say "things would have been better NOW."
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
