What does "tenant" mean in this sentence?

    Hi guys

I know "tenant" means someone who rents an apartment, house, office, piece of land, etc. from the person who owns it.
However, I'm not sure what "tenant" means in the sentence below.

"Less is more” is a tenant I preach for many things, and when it comes to makeup and aging, not practicing it is a serious mistake.

Can somebody help me? Thanks a lot!

In your sentence, the word should be "tenet" not tenant".

    See the definition here: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/tenet

This is a common error made by people who don't know the difference.
