    by the fast? grammar question!

    But the flavors tobacco companies once sold look like plain vanilla compared with the flavor buffet now on offer legally by the fast-growing electronic cigarette industry.

    See the sentence above. You can see 'by the fast' how the word 'fast' can be followed by 'the'? Isn't it 'by fast'? I think 'fast' here, it is used as adjective.

    Second question! Where is the main verb in this sentence?
    I think the subject is 'The flavors' at the first part of the sentence, but where the verb can be found?

    You can't separate 'fast' from 'fast-growing' — an adjective modifying ''the electronic cigarette industry'.

    The main verb is 'look'.

    It's "fast-growing" which, as you suggest is an adjective. The electronic cigarette industry is fast-growing. It is a fast-growing industry.

    I am not a teacher.

    'Fast' isn't followed by 'the'. 'The' is followed by 'fast'.
