The best way is to interact frequently with NES of English.

    I am not a teacher.

I thought NES was the Nintendo Entertainment System.

If it also means 'native English speakers' isn't the 'of English' superfluous?

If they will tolerate your presence, spend all your spare time among teenagers and 20-somethings in school yards and nightclubs. Be prepared to learn new slang words every week or two, as using outdated slang will expose you to ridicule.

As for learning idioms, click on Reference above and then Idioms.

Urban Dictionary is an excellent source for slang.
