The prevention of this disease in patients is common practice and follows recommendations of medical societies.
What does "follows" mean here?
Does it mean that the recommendations of medical societies are complied with?
Does it mean that prevention is done after recommendations of medical societies?
Both are correct. But the real meaning is closer to 1.
The recommendations aren't simply statements to the effect that "We recommend that you prevent this disease". Recommendations are in the forms of guidelines and regimes of procedures, etc. If you "follow" the recommendations, you are complying with the advice they give.
Naturally, efforts to prevent a disease can occur any time, but following the recommendations of a medical body can only occur after those recommendations have been made.
