To turn down a lane

Hi. I'm reading "A Study in Scarlet" at the moment, and I need a little help with this idiom - "to turn down a (narrow) lane". I don't know, but I checked up in many dictionaries, but sadly didn't find any convinient meaning of that idiom. It's always "to turn down the offer" or other meanings, that have nothing to do in this case. Help me please, if you can. Thanks

It sounds like a literal meaning to me. Could you give the context, or reference so I can find it?

It simply means "to turn into a narrow lane" ie to change direction (turn) and start travelling on a narrow lane instead of the road you were on before.

We quite frequently (in BrE at least) say things like "Go straight ahead for about twenty yards then turn left down Robertson Road". It has nothing to do with direction. It's just colloquial usage.
