A people's life of Christ. = A persons' life of Christ.
Why use the indefinite article a here?

The book is a narrative of the life of Christ. "People's" could be omitted. The author hopes that lay people (not specialists in religion or divinity students) will hopefully find it interesting and accessible.

May I take 'A people's life of Christ' to mean 'A book of the life of Christ intended for ordinary people'?

    Re: A People's Life of Christ (1920)

Since 'A People's Life of Christ' is intended for ordinary people, is 'The People's Republic of China' intended for ordinary people too linguistically?

    Re: A People's Life of Christ (1920)

Couldn't People in the names of states mean everybody- the whole people, rather than an elite? In the title of the book, it suggests it's not elitist, but in the name of a state, it would suggest that professors and others are not part of the state. I wouldn't interpret the two the same way. The results might not be the same as the intention- the Life of Christ could be beloved by professors of theology, and intellectuals and elites could feel out of place in the state, but that doesn't affect the intention behind the name IMO.
