an american agent or american agent

should I say"He was looking for an american agent" or should I delete "an"

When I answered the phone, I was not able to say anything because he just interrupted and said, "I want to speak to an american agent"

(note: UsingEnglish.com is really very helpful! This is usually the first page I open every time I surf the net)

No you can't delete 'an'. Is there a reason you think you can?

So "an" should not be deleted. Thanks a lot. (Does this means the rest of the sentence is grammatically correct?)

The sentence is correct with "an American", but it needs a period/full stop at the end.
