Is there such word as "busyness"?

    Hi Teachers,

As we know that the state of being happy, we use happiness.

Then what about the state of being busy, do we use "busyness" or "business"?

The word "business" normally means profession or trade.

So is there such word as "busyness"?

If not, then what should be used to express the state of being busy?

    Please advise.

    Thank you.

What does your dictionary tell you? Have you found the word there? Always try a dictionary first. This is a good site: http://www.onelook.com/
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Re: Is there such word as "busyness"?

    Hi Teachers,

I have tried looking up for the word "busyness" but I could not find it in "Cambridge International Dictionary of English" (printed copy), whereas I can find the word "busyness" from the recommended site: http://www.onelook.com/

My question: Why can I not find the word "busyness" in British dictionary? Is "busyness" a British or American word?

    Thank you.

Re: Is there such word as "busyness"?

Why I cannot find the word
Why can't I find the word
Why can I not find the word

NOT: Why I cannot find the word (if you want to ask a question)

It's a word. It's a somewhat new word, I think, but it would be understood.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Not every word is in every dictionary.

The OneLook site tells you that 'busyness' is common in both BrE and AmE.
