good bye or farewell -which is more final?

    Hi there,
In a film I've seen recently, a girl says to her beloved man, 'Farewell. It should be farewell and never good bye.' The general situations hints that she doesn't feel like parting with the man forever, though I've always taken 'farewell' as smth definitely final, and 'good bye' as an indicator of parting only. What's the real stand of things with 'farewell' and 'good bye'? What's the difference? Which of them is finalising? Thank you for your kind help!
