    Star-spangled banner flag

    Hi,

I can understand 'star-spangled banner' or 'star-spangled flag', but 'star-spangled banner flag' confuses me
as I consider flag to be a type of banner, which makes one of the words in the combination redundant.

Can you please help me to understand that.

    Thanks,

    Alex

All due respect Rover, but you didn't get what I'm asking. I spent time googling the subject and didn't find the answer. In fact, I do it every time before asking a question on the forum.

    Re: Star-spangled banner flag

The American flag is "the star-spangled banner."

Just call it either "the American flag" or "the star-spangled banner." Don't try to combine them.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Star-spangled banner flag

I didn't try to, I came across that in this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Spangled_Banner_Flag and just became curious.
Anyway, I think your answer proves my initial point that that combination doesn't sound right.

    Thank you, Barb.
