Hi,
What would a native English speaker call someone who uses lights to prepare scene for artists to play?

Not projectionist - which is (was, mostly) the person at a cinema who operated the projector (which projected the image from a film onto the screen).

In a theatre there is person called the lighting designer and a number of minions who probably call themselves things like 'lighting engineer', 'lighting technician', 'lighting assistant'.... I don't know of a special word for this activity.

More informally, people often say lightman. I knew a woman who ran lights named Candace Brightman. What a perfect name!

Candace Brightman is certainly an odd name for lights. ;-)
