    A great influence

Please would you correct the mistakes in my sentences. I am not sure if "..who had a great influence on him" is defining or non-defining

    1. One day John met his old teacher who had a great influence on him when he was a student.
    2. One day John met his old teacher, Mr Hornby, who had a great influence on him when he was a student.

    Re: A great influence

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello, Bassim:

    In my OPINION:

    1. One day John met his old teacher, who had (had) a great influence on him when he was a student. = non-defining.

    2. One day John met an old teacher who had (had) a great influence on him when he was a student. = defining.

    3. One day John met his old teacher, Mr. Horny, who had (had) a great influence on him when he was a student. = non-defining.

    4. One day John met Mr. Horny, an old teacher who had (had) a great influence on him when he was a student. = defining.

    James

P.S. Perhaps some writing teachers would suggest that you delete (drop) "when he was a student." Your readers / listeners have probably assumed (guessed) that this influence occurred when John was his student.
