    I will be late for...

I will be late 'for' work tomorrow. I have to go to the dentist.

    Why don't we use 'at'?

I think It is wierd because we usually use I am at work/in work.

I simply deem it a rule to use 'for' after 'late', regardless of whether it is weird or not.

    Not a teacher.

Re: I will be late for...

It's just a question of collocation. There are ways of paraphrasing so that 'late' and 'at' fall in the right order in a grammatical sentence, but there has to be something between them - such as 'I will be late when I arrive at work' [NB: I only said 'grammatical', not good or natural.]
