"make up" a story?

Dear all,

The other day I was trying to "make up" a story together with my son. We'll choose a character and make up what happens to him (we did this just by talking to each other). I want to ask if "make up" is the right verb to use in this situation.

The phrases "invent a story" and "concoct a story" are usually employed when a deception is intended or suspected.
Although "make up a story" is also used in such a context, I feel that it's the more natural form in the situation described by the OP.
