    subsiding

    Hi expert teachers,

In my city, the dam is full of water in summer but not in winter. So I want to make a sentence.

Is "The dam is subsiding" correct and does it mean it is going back? It will soon have less water.

    Thanks.

    Re: subsiding

No, the dam is not subsiding, the water level is going down.

    Re: subsiding

    Thank you, bhaisahab.

I think I understand it now.

Is "The water level of the dam is subsiding" correct?

    Re: subsiding

No. 'The water level of the reservoir is subsiding'.

EDIT: I've just learnt something new — a dam can mean a body of water held back by a dam. I've only ever called it a reservoir or lake, so your sentence is correct, Naeem Afzal, if you use 'dam' in that sense.

    dam

    n.

    1. a barrier to obstruct or control the flow of water, built across a stream or river:When the dam broke, the flood spread to the village.
    2. a body of water held back by a dam:You can go fishing and canoeing in the dam.

    Re: subsiding

I still think your original opinion was correct.

    Re: subsiding

By one of those weird coincidences, the Mosul Dam in Iraq is all over the news today.
