    It usually means to go separate ways, to take different directions in life. It's not geographic. It's about emotional distance.

    - We were very close as children, but since then, we've grown apart.

    Ok it means to get seperated but its a gradual process that takes time like "They have been growing apart for the last one year and now finally they have separated". Is it correct?
