    and there was no answer

    Are these sentences correct:
    1-We found these papers in his house, which we had been calling for days and there was no answer.

    2-We found1 these papers in his house, which we had been calling for days without getting an answer.


    I think '2' is fine. I am not sure the last part of the first one (and there was no answer) fits well with the rest of it.

    I agree with you.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
