Hi everyone,

Chris Norman has song that starts with this verse:
Our love is alive, so we begin
Foolishly laying our hearts on the table, stumbling in

What does the bold sentence mean literally and really?
Is the literal meaning that they are making their hearts stumble on the table or they themselves are stumbling?!
And is the real meaning something like this: We have fun like children and do careless things?!

Thanks, in advance.

Obviously it is not meant literally. More context would be helpful (Also cash would help.)

(Don't thank me in advance. I give terrible advice.)

Well, an interpretation would kind of spoil it, wouldn't it?

The words indicate an emotional involvement. The "stumbling in" part is not a literal stumbling in. (There must have been a million love songs written, and it never gets old. Well, maybe a little.)

My problem is that i'm not a native speaker and I need to make a sensible paraphrase in my mind to get the meaning.
I know interpretation would spoil a poem, but at least a rephrase would be possible!

You have not been paying attention. It is clearly a love song. (The word "love" is the second word.) Two people have a love relationship, probably an intense one. Who knows how things are going to go from here, however? After all, things are just getting started. The phrase "stumbling in" indicates that they are letting their feelings guide them, and feelings can be pretty undependable.

not a teacher

Foolishly laying our hearts on the table, stumbling in.

As Tarheel says, this is a love song. In my opinion, "laying our hearts on the table" means allowing our feelings to show, and "stumbling in" refers to the way in which we might not feel sure-footed and clear-headed when entering a new relationship.
