Question Need help with some questions

Hello.. I have some questions I dont understand, from Proficiency exam I took. Could you please help me?

1-The students will have covered the whole course before they take the fnal exams in June.
What does the verb cover refer to here?

2-Half a dozen sheep were/was lying- The Answer says were but there's no -s?

Having wandered from one country to another, Karen finally settled in Australia, where she decided to write stories about her travels around the world and make a name- as/being a writer.- I believe both is possible. But it says 'being' in the Proficiency exam of Marmara University

such/so terrifying a peak that from then on...-?

Thank you all so much in advance

What does the verb cover refer to here? "covered" means 'taken'/'studied'

2-Half a dozen sheep were/was lying- The Answer says were but there's no -s? The plural of 'sheep' is also 'sheep'.

Having wandered from one country to another, Karen finally settled in Australia, where she decided to write stories about her travels around the world and make a name- as/being a writer.- I believe both are possible. But it says 'being' in the Proficiency exam of Marmara University "as" sounds much more natural to me.

Sometimes tests written by institutions are not 100% accurate. I would question being as an answer. It might not be 100% wrong, but as is much more clearly the better choice to me. I would guess that someone clicked on the wrong option in the database when making the test- I have done it more than once.
