    Question The Symbol "e"

How come the word "air" is phonetically written as "er" (American pronunciation) ?!
At the back of Oxford dictionary it says that the "e" symbol represents the sound e in "pen", but that doesn't sound right in the word "air".

    Re: The Symbol "e"

In the dictionary I often use, the phonetic for "air" is (Ôr).
