This is ironic how people who know they're going to die take shelter in faith.

Is this sentence well constructed?

I am not a teacher.

Replace 'This' by 'It'.

No comment on the sentiment.

What's the difference between 'It' and 'This' there?

I am not a teacher.

'It is' introduces the statement that follows.

'This is' would normally be used to refer to something previously mentioned.

People who know they're going to die take shelter in faith. This is ironic.

I'm not sure why you think it is "ironic."
