    Question subordinating conjunction

    Hello All,
Does "because" acting like "subordinating conjunction" in the following sentence?!
They were late for class because of traffic.

I think it is not S.C, because S.C comes before and in the beginning of a CLAUSE . and "of traffic " is not clause.

    Am I right?!
    Thanks.

    Re: subordinating conjunction

You are right that "of traffic" is not a clause.

    Re: subordinating conjunction

"Because of" is a preposition there.

    Re: subordinating conjunction

"because" can be used as a subordinate conjunction, but in your example it is not.
