Hi,

What does "stamp off" mean in this sentence?

"In that case, I don't want to be a fairy!" said Georgina, and stamped off.

Is "stamp off" phrasal verb? Is it formal or informal word?

From the story "The football fairy" in 365 Stories and Rhymes for Girls book.

Thanks,

Tdol

She went away stamping her feet.

Our American friends will say that 'stomped off' is more colloquial for them.

'Stomp' is not used much in BE.

I would say that "stomp off" is used very frequently in BrE.

Confirming that "stomp off" is the American usage I'm familiar with.

In BrE, we tend to say that someone "stamps" on something when they bang their foot down very hard but when we're talking about walking away angrily, we use "stomp off".

I'm very angry with my son. He stamped on a snail earlier and killed it. I need to remind him that it is wrong to kill animals.
I told my son off for killing a snail. He stomped off, slammed the door of his bedroom and I haven't seen him since.
