    was gone to mean went

    Is it accurate to say things like "He was already gone to work" or "He is gone to catch the last subway" to mean he had already gone or has gone?

    In BrE, no.

    He had already gone to work.
    He has gone to catch the last train.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
