    spatula

    Hi,

Can you possibly explain why spatula is pronounced as spatchela.

I mean "t" for "tch", and "u" for "e" in after? Is spatula a French loanword, something like that?

    Thank you!

    Re: spatula

Technically, it should be pronounced "spat-you-luh". We're just lazy! The only person I know who pronounces it 'properly' is my mother.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: spatula

Oxford dictionaries say it comes from Latin, but I think we use the pronunciation simply because it's easier: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us...nglish/spatula
