    If the subject is singular

    Hi,
If a subject in some sentence is singular and it contains a plural name that I want to continue the sentence with ( in simple present tense) do we put "s" in the end of the verb although we're giving sections to the plural name in the subject like:
"A special kind of gifts which are toys and candies were given to the children."
I mean we can't say "A special kind of gifts is toys nnd candies,,,"
Could someone please explain to me?
    Thanks

Re: If the subject is singular

It's not a very natural sentence. "gift" should probably be singular, that wouldn't improve the sentence, though

Can we say "Special kinds of gifts" instead.
    Thanks.

You could say "Special kinds of gifts, toys and candies, were given to the children".
