    Post there came

    Hello Dear Users,

I need to ask a question about a phrase which you are likely to face it many times.

"Then suddenly his visits had ceased. It was over nine years since Frodo had seen or heard of him, and he had begun to think that the wizard would never return and had given up all interest in hobitts. But that evening, as Sam was walking home and twilight was fading, there came the once familiar tap on the study window."

As you guess, the passage is from the Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring.

My question is that could you explain what does meaning of "there came" grammatically?

    Thank you.

If we remove the ones between commas, is it like: "the once tap came on the study window there that evening"?

    Re: there came

"There came" is a delayed subject construction. Rearranged, the sentence would be: The once familiar tap on the study window came" (occurred).
