    What does "figure" mean in the following context?

    Banks were the happiest engines that ever were invented for advancing trade. Venice, Genoa, Hamburg ... are examples of their utility. They owe their riches, commerce, and the figure they have made ... to this source.

    Does it refer to "any economic achievements measured by numbers"?

    The passage in queston is written by Alexander Hamilton, the first treasury secretary of the US. It's quoted in the book.
