    This is "name"

    Hello! This is Mike. May I speak to Tom?

    I have heard many times people saying "this is 'their name'", particularly during phone calls.

    Some say "this" can be used only for non humans. I know it is quite common to use this as in the above case but I just want to confirm it from the teachers and natives here.
