    John in London

    Are these sentences correct:
1-John in London did some research on this subject.

2-John, in London, did some research on this subject.

I think 2 is a good sentence but maybe it might be used instead of : 'John, when in London, did some research on this subject.'

    I find 1 strange.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: John in London

    not a teacher

If you know a John in London and a John in Paris and you wanted to make it clear which one you were referring to, then (1) is fine.

Example (2) can also work in that situation. However, there is also a possibility you are saying that John did the research while he was in London, rather than somewhere else. This might be more naturally stated as: "John did some research on this subject in London".
"John, while/when in London, did some research on this subject", definitely says that John did the research during the time that he was in London, rather than somewhere else.
