    Past perfect or simple past

    Hello,
I want to know what the correct answer is

------- you -------- Anna when you went there? ( see )
    a) did/see
    b) had/seen

I'd say ( had seen ) is the correct answer but the question makes no sense as it would mean, he saw her first and then he went there

    Thank you

Then, if the question makes no sense with your chosen answer, maybe the other form is correct. Why don't you like a)?

According to the past perfect rule, two verbs exist, one should be in the past perfect and the other in the past simple. However, using the past perfect can be optional as the sentence itself indicates which verb took place first. This is the reason why I say (had been)

Re: Past perfect or simple past

I would select A. I would consider B if "when" were changed to "before".
