    Synonyms for defeat

    Hi teachers,

He defeated the champion in three sets.
Can I use "trounced, beat, conquered, vanquished, routed, overcame, thrashed, hammered in place of "defeated"?

    Are the following sentences correct?

    1) He trounced the champion in three sets.
    2) He beat the champion in three sets.
    3) He conquered the champion in three sets.
    4) He vanquished the champion in three sets.
    5) He routed the champion in three sets.
    6) He overcame the champion in three sets.
    7) He thrashed the champion in three sets.
    8) He hammered the champion in three sets.

To me 1, 2, 7, 8 are absolutely correct. However I am not sure about the other options. Please help.

    Thanks.

    Re: Synonyms for defeat

Trounce, hammer and thrash all suggest that he beat his opponent by a great margin. It was an easy win. His opponent didn't get many points. That sort of thing. They are much stronger than beat, conquer, defeat etc.

Are "rout, vanquish, overcome" also correct?

    Re: Synonyms for defeat

I would say that "vanquish" and "overcome" go with "beat/defeat" and "rout" fits with "trounce".
