    Comma

    1. We went to Bar Harbor but did not take the ferry to Nova Scotia.

    2. All students are eligible to receive tickets but must go to the athletic
    office to pick them up.

PLEASE explain why there is not any comma before "but". I thought it was necessary to put a comma before but.

    1. If it was me, I would write the sentences with a comma. " We went to Bar Harbor, but did not take the ferry to Nova Scotia".

    2. All students are eligible to receive tickets, but must go to the athletic office to pick them up.

    Thanks

    Re: Comma

This is a question of style, and style is a matter of preference; it has no fixed rules. Some people would use your commas, and some would omit them. Personally I prefer to omit them.

    Re: Comma

I think it would be the "athletics office". The office isn't athletic.
I don't see the need for the commas either.
