    readymades

    Hi,

I would like to know the meaning of this sentence.

"When other artists of her generation look stupid when they take up charcoals or brushes, and undermine the myth of talent their readymades may have created, it turns out Emin was sitting on a suitcase of spare ability all along."

    Thank you.

    Re: readymades

I suppose it refers to Emin Cizanel, but apart from that I find it hard to discern any meaning in it.

    Re: readymades

    not a teacher

The artist referred to is Tracey Emin, as bhaisahab says. In an art context, a "readymade" usually means a manufactured object that is presented, sometimes in slightly altered form, as an artwork. The quote is suggesting that some artists whose reputations rely on work of this nature, can be exposed as having limited talents when they try to paint or draw in a more traditional manner. It says that Emin, on the other hand, appears to be able to paint and draw well.
