    Re: Participles question

'Standing, as it does on a hill' = 'As it stands on a hill'.

    Not a teacher.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello, Kiann:

Sometimes it helps in a multiple-choice test if you first eliminate the obviously incorrect answers.

We can eliminate (a) because a villa is not a "he."

We can eliminate (d) because it uses the verb "is" as a substitute for "standing." As you know, only "does" will work:

Q: Does the villa still stand on that hill?
    A: Yes, it does.

We can eliminate (b) because (i) it says "was" (instead of "did") and (ii) it refers to the past, but we know that the villa is STILL standing: "... his villa commands a fine view." Thus, it should be "does."

    James

P.S. I also feel that a comma is missing after "does":

"Standing on a hill, his villa commands a fine view."
Standing, as it does, on a hill, his villa commands a fine view."

    Re: Participles question

I agree with your logic but not about the commas.

    Re: Participles question

I would use no commas around 'as it does'.
