I think you should build the deeper engagement. Make sure that you know their need during the learning process. So, if you close with your students, they will follow what you ask/command.

Re: How to manage crowded class

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello,

Yes, you are correct: "A rotten apple spoils the barrel."

Does your school have a procedure regarding disruptive students? (Sending him to the office? Making him stay after school?)

Many teachers agree on this: everything depends on the START of your class each day.

As your ten students walk in each day, they should have something to do immediately.

It could be anything: (a) they copy a poem that you have written on the chalk-, whiteboard, (b) they do a short grammar lesson that is on a handout that they get as they enter the room, (c) they are expected to take dictation as soon as the class begins. (Does your class begin with a bell? If it does, you start dictating as soon as the bell stops. Let them know that the dictation will be checked and counted as part of their marks.)

You should have a seating chart. Let them know that you will change seats as needed -- every day if possible. You will soon learn which students should be separated from one another.

    Best wishes!

    James

P.S. You could also make that bad boy your assistant. Give him jobs to do, e.g., handing out books and collecting them, turning the air-conditioning on / off, etc. He will feel important and soon demand that the other students behave themselves!

Please pay attention to the following.

    1. Such abbreviations as 'u' are unacceptable on this forum.
    2. Clicking on the 'Thank' button can obviate the need for a new post saying 'Thank you', such is one of the many unwritten rules on this forum.
    3. You have to state 'Not a teacher' in your answers unless you are a teacher.

    I am not a teacher.
