How does one formulate a question to ask for the order in a list of people?
E.g. How do you ask the question whose answer is "George W. Bush is the forty-third president of the U.S.A." ? Do you say, "What order is GWB in the list of US presidents?"
What about children in a family? E.g. The question whose answer is, "Jimmy is the 4th child in the family. " Do you ask, "Which order is Jimmy in your list of children?" I doubt that.
Same goes for number of visitors. If I want to ask what "n-th" visitor I am to this place, how do I do that?
I hope I am getting through with my badly worded question.
It's not an easy one this- we have had the question before: http://www.usingenglish.com/forum/as...-question.html
It is hard to think of a natural questionf for this. I'd probably use 'Where does GWB come in the list/order of presidents?'
For children too:
It is possibleto ask 'Where do you come/fall in the family?'
