    Explaining the word

    Dear Sir/Madam

I read "An Odyssey of the North" a short story of Jack London.

Could you explain the sentence "There was an ingathering of back hands, a tightening of traces" to me
I don't know the meaning of "back hands" and a tightening of traces

    Best regards

I have no idea what "back hands" are. Can you give us some more context? What were the sentences around it? What was happening at the time?

    Re: Explaining the word

    Hi,

"There was an ingathering of back hands, a tightening of traces; the sleds leaped forward, and the men clung to the gee poles, violently accelerating the uplift of their feet that they might escape going under the runners."

Could you explain to me the meaning.

    Thanks

    Re: Explaining the word

I'm more confused than I was before! What are the people doing? What is the situation? I don't recognise any of the "clues" - back hands, traces, gee poles, runners.

Are they taking part in dog-sledding?

    Re: Explaining the word

What is the sentence before it? Is there any earlier mention of 'back hands'? They are probably manual workers of some kind.

Please note that a better title would have been There was an ingathering of back hands.

They are travelling in the North Pole by dog-sled. It's dark now and they hope to see a shelter.

    Re: Explaining the word

Well, I've Googled dog-sledding terms and it didn't really help, especially with "back hands". Here is the page for "Mushing Terminology".
