    Hey, what was that?

When you are watching TV with your firends and suddenly the door close.
You say "Hey, what was that?" or "Hey, what is that?"

    Is "Is" or "Was"?

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Hey, what was that?

It's in the past (though it's the immediate past). If something started buzzing, and carried on you'd say 'What is that?' (That underline marks my stress - making the point. The 'is' wouldn't be stressed the first time it's asked. But if you thought it might be the smoke alarm, and went into the hall to check - and found it wasn't - then you'd say 'What is that?')
