    nothing to be done

    Do they mean what I think they mean?

    1) There was nothing to be done. - (There was left nothing for us to do even if we had tried to.)

    2) There was nothing to do. - (There was nothing interesting for us to do or entertain ourselves.)

    1) also means "There was nothing we could do [about the situation], even if we wanted to." It was out of our control.
