I can not understand this sentence

I've bought a book from Aghata Christie.
In the middle of chapter 3 , I've face a sentence that can not understand it very well.

"A man was standing on duty and went up a drive with bushes on both sides"

The man was on duty. He moved up a drive (street) that had bushes on both sides of it.

Also, Agatha Christie is dead. You can buy a book by her, but not from her.
