    Question Possible meaning of "Brides"

    Dear Teachers,

    in reading this original excerpt:

"As you read this article, 5.5 million children around the world are losing their childhood to slavery. They are being beaten, abused, and sometimes raped. They are forced to work in brothels, mines, brick kilns, fishing boats, and hotels. They work behind closed doors as domestic labourers. Many become soldiers, brides, and drug dealers".

I wonder about the use of the word "bride" in the last sentence. Is this clear to you? Should I understand it as "Young women marrying men who are older and powerful"? I don't think it is very clear; is it?

    Very best regards,

    Luigi

The piece is about children, so it is children who are being forced into marriage IMO. It's clear enough to me- it's saying that they're too young to marry.

Thank you so much! But it means just _female_ children, right? Not males...?

Yes, girls being forced to marry at an age that is too young for marriage. (And not their choice.)
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Yes- I agree with Barb_D. I was thinking about the age and forgot the gender.
