    heads a bobbing

    Hello,

I would like to know what does "heads a bobbing" mean here. This construction seems a bit weird to me, especially with that "a". I'm guessing it means "their heads bobbing" but I'm confused by that "a".

"The nabobs can be seen, heads a bobbing, driving by in their Italian sports cars, listening to techno."

    Thanks.

It means their heads were bobbing.

    Re: heads a bobbing

"Heads a-bobbing" or any "a-" gerund construction is just a folksy, contrived way of saying something. For example, as in the nursery rhyme "Little Bo Peep": "Leave them alone and they'll come home, a-wagging their tails behind them." Dorothy from The Golden Girls even poked fun a Sophia once for announcing that "a hurricane is a-coming!"
