    Is the following sentence natural?

    He takes others' pain to heart.
    If I were a native speaker of English, I would never shut up. :-)

    I wouldn't call it natural, but it's understandable. 'Taking something to heart' is, to me, over-reacting to something that affects oneself. For your case I'd just say something like 'He [feels/is sensitive to/...] other people's pain.'
